Hybrid Construction
Rigid-Flex
Circuits
Rigid and flexible substrates laminated into a single structure — eliminating connectors, enabling 3D packaging, and delivering superior reliability for aerospace and defense.
Rigid-flex circuits are a hybrid construction combining rigid PCB substrate zones and flexible circuit zones laminated together as a single integrated assembly. This is not a rigidized flex — where a stiffener supports component weight. In true rigid-flex, all layers are electrically integrated.
The rigid zones provide stable platforms for component attachment. The flexible zones connect the rigid zones, replacing the connectors and wire harnesses that would otherwise be needed between separate rigid boards.
Eliminating connectors is the primary reliability advantage. Every connector is a potential failure point. In aerospace, military, and medical applications where connectors cannot be accessed for repair, eliminating them significantly improves system MTBF.
GCA Flex has manufactured rigid-flex circuits for defense and aerospace customers for over 30 years. The technology that once served only military designers is now common in commercial laptops, medical equipment, and smartphones.
